Regional SDS Masterplan Consultant

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a consultant to lead the development of a Regional Sand and Dust Storm (SDS) Masterplan for West Asia. Based in the UNEP West Asia Office, the consultant will work remotely and report to the Project Manager, collaborating with the Regional SDS Centre and national partners.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership to produce a coherent Regional SDS Masterplan that guides policy and actions at regional, national and local levels.
• Conduct a comprehensive literature review on SDS sources, hotspots, drivers and mitigation measures in West Asia.
• Compile and validate a list of SDS hotspots using existing datasets and develop practical criteria for their categorisation.
• Align and consolidate technical inputs from the Regional SDS Centre, the National Centre for Meteorology and other stakeholders into a single document.
• Offer technical advisory support to the National Centre for Meteorology on the development of the national SDS framework and participate in relevant meetings and reviews.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in environmental science, meteorology, climate studies or a related field.
• Proven experience in regional environmental planning, sand‑and‑dust storm research or similar climate‑related projects.
• Demonstrated ability to work with international organisations and multi‑stakeholder teams.
• Excellent technical writing and analytical skills.
