Director of Statistics, Information Society & Technology

About the role

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) seeks a senior leader to head Cluster 4 – Statistics, Information Society and Technology. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programmes, the Director will drive the cluster’s strategic agenda, digital transformation and data‑driven policymaking across the Arab region.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement the substantive work programme for the Statistics, Information Society and Technology Cluster.
• Manage cluster resources, oversee budgets, mobilise funding and evaluate staff performance.
• Provide strategic advice to senior ESCWA leadership on policy, technical cooperation and stakeholder engagement.
• Lead technical cooperation, capacity‑building and change‑management initiatives for member states.
• Oversee preparation of reports for intergovernmental bodies and coordinate the Committee on Statistics and the Committee of Technology.
• Conceptualise and supervise major systems initiatives, including complex data integration and digital transformation projects.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in statistics, information technology, demography, social sciences or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in statistics and/or technology at the international level.
• At least 5 years of strategic and managerial experience overseeing complex digital or data projects.
• Proven experience in policy development, technical cooperation and partnership building in the UN system or similar organisations.
• Fluency in English, French and Arabic.

• Expert knowledge of digital transformation and data analytics.
• Strong background in statistical methodology and information technology.
• Experience with system integration, database management and innovative technology applications.
