AI Engineer - Adaptive Learning

About the role

This is a hands-on, ownership-led role building and owning the AI and adaptive learning layer of e-learning products, covering teaching, learning, content creation and analytics. You will choose the right technical approach for each problem, ground AI in your own educational content, personalize learning for each student, work across Arabic and English, and do it responsibly with student data and young learners.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver AI and adaptive learning features on the roadmap, recommending the best technical approach and sequencing.
• Design and build AI features end to end, from prototype to production, using LLMs, retrieval, machine-learning models and classical techniques.
• Own the adaptive learning engine: personalized paths, mastery and progress tracking, difficulty adjustment and targeted remediation, starting rule-based and growing more data-driven.
• Define, with content and product teams, the metadata and learning-data foundations (what each piece of content teaches, at what difficulty, against which skill).
• Instrument the platform to capture learning signals from day one, and build systems that ground AI in your own content and data safely.
• Stand up and evaluate self-hosted and API-based models, and define responsible-AI practices for safety, guardrails, data privacy and compliance.
• Establish evaluation and measurement for every feature, reporting impact and cost to leadership.
• Write clean, production-grade Python, integrate AI services via well-defined APIs, and mentor a junior AI engineer.

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years shipping AI or machine-learning features to real users.
• Ability to model learner knowledge and progress, or the fundamentals and appetite to build that capability.
• Rigorous approach to evaluating and measuring output quality and learning impact.
• Ability to explain AI and adaptive decisions to non-technical stakeholders and to document your work.
• Comfortable working with content and editorial teams, and a responsible approach to data and privacy with children and student records.

Required skills

• Strong Python, with API design.
• Large language models, retrieval and embeddings, and machine-learning models, with judgment to pick the right tool.
• Core toolkit: LLM APIs, RAG, vector databases (e.g. pgvector, FAISS, Chroma, Pinecone), SQL, pandas, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, Docker, CI/CD, and a major cloud (AWS, GCP or Azure).
• Nice to have: knowledge tracing, IRT, MLOps, Arabic content or multilingual NLP, and experience as the most senior AI person on a team.
