Machine Learning Engineer

About the role

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) seeks a Machine Learning Engineer to join its Decision‑Support and Data Science Division. Working remotely, you will design, develop, and deploy advanced machine‑learning and computational‑economics methods on socioeconomic data across the Arab region, supporting the Arab Development Portal and the ISPAR platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, train, and validate supervised and unsupervised machine‑learning models for nowcasting, forecasting, optimization, anomaly detection, and structural‑change analysis.
• Apply computational‑economics techniques such as agent‑based modeling, computable general equilibrium (CGE) frameworks, and microsimulation to economic datasets.
• Build and maintain ETL pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and integration from national statistics, UN databases, and open‑data sources.
• Develop reproducible ML experiments using version‑controlled pipelines (e.g., MLflow equivalents).
• Collaborate autonomously with the unit lead to align methodological frameworks and deliver evidence‑based insights for policy‑making.

Required profile

• Strong background in machine learning, data science, or computational economics.
• Experience handling large socioeconomic or macro‑economic datasets.
• Ability to work independently, manage end‑to‑end model development, and communicate technical results to non‑technical stakeholders.
