Legal Translator Consultant (Arabic to French)

About the role

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lebanon seeks an experienced legal translator to convert selected Constitutional Council decisions from Arabic into French. The work supports the LEAPS project’s goal of improving transparency and accessibility of Lebanon’s electoral jurisprudence for international stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Review each decision in its entirety to understand legal context, identify key concepts and ensure consistent terminology.
• Translate 77 decisions (approximately 1,250 pages) from Arabic to French, preserving structure, numbering, headings and operative provisions.
• Conduct substantive legal and linguistic quality checks, correct any inaccuracies, and proofread the final documents.
• Coordinate with the Constitutional Council and UNDP project manager to incorporate feedback and obtain final approval.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Translation or Law.
• Minimum four years of professional experience translating legal documents from Arabic to French (or Arabic to English with French proficiency).
• Professional proficiency in Arabic and French, with ability to produce accurate legal texts.

Required skills

• Legal translation (Arabic → French) with strong knowledge of constitutional and electoral law.
• Technical legal editing to ensure accuracy of terminology, references and procedural elements.
